Are there any intimidating reads you plan to tackle this year? ️ If your answer to that question is War and Peace, you’re not alone! To connect with myself and other Bookstagrammers taking it on this year, use #warandpeaceclub2018 . @thebookfox created it so we can all encourage each other along the way! ️ And if you’re wondering if this post seems familiar, I did in fact resolve to read W&P last year as well. But don’t worry, I have a feeling 2018 is my year to finish what I started. . . . . . . . #warandpeace #leotolstoy #russianliterature #vintagebooks #stairwaytoclassics #igreads #igbooks #bookish #bookishfeatures #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramfeature #booksofinstagram #bookporn #culturetripbooks #bookblog #bookblogger #classiclit #classicliterature #bookstack #bookspines #bibliophile #bookcollector #bookcollection #fortheloveofreading

Saturday morning vibes. Read a great little parable this morning over at @medium that I wanted to share. . “A certain farmer had become old and ready to pass his farm down to one of his two sons. When he brought his sons together to speak about it, he told them: The farm will go to the younger son. . The older son was furious! “What are you talking about?!” he fumed. . The father sat patiently, thinking. “Okay,” the father said, “I need you to do something for me. We need more stocks. Will you go to Cibi’s farm and see if he has any cows for sale?” . The older son shortly returned and reported, “Father, Cibi has 6 cows for sale.” . The father graciously thanked the older son for his work. He then turned to the younger son and said, “I need you to do something for me. We need more stocks. Will you go to Cibi’s farm and see if he has any cows for sale?” . The younger son did as he was asked. A short while later, he returned and reported, “Father, Cibi has 6 cows for sale. Each cow will cost 2,000 rupees. If we are thinking about buying more than 6 cows, Cibi said he would be willing to reduce the price 100 rupees. Cibi also said they are getting special jersey cows next week if we aren’t in a hurry, it may be good to wait. However, if we need the cows urgently, Cibi said he could deliver the cows tomorrow.” . The father graciously thanked the younger son for his work. . He then turned to the older son and said, “That’s why your younger brother is getting the farm.” . Loved this article by Benjamin P Hardy. Worth checking out if you have two minutes. It’s called One Behaviour Separates the Successful from the Average. . Hope everyone has a great Saturday!

Good morning bookstagram! I've been struggling since yesterday, blowing my nose and coughing. I think I have a sinus infection, which is the worst. How's your weekend going? ️️️️️ #rfabjanuary18 - Bookish Merch #spicynovelsjan18 - Diverse Main Character Jem, my fave

. #buecherkompass #culturetripbooks #bookishfeatures #bookgeek #bookster #booknookstagram #bookphotography #bibliophile #readers #bookstagramfeature #bookaddict #igread #bookish #bibliophile #igbooks #photography #booknerd #inspiration #winter #reading #lesen #bücher #books #classics #derreportdermagd #piper #margaretatwood #thehandmaidstale

“Sometimes I feel I am like a high-spirited dog tethered by a strong chain to a stake fixed to this old house. Whenever it tries to slip its lead the chain is made tighter and tighter until it bites into the flesh. When it moves, the blood flows and the pain intensified. My kind rejects this form of bondage but I cannot free myself of it. I am helpless, helpless.” - Ulfat Idilbi, “Sabriya, Damascus Bitter Sweet” • . “Sabriya” portrays life in Damascus in the 1920s, during the French occupation and the nationalist rebellion. It’s a frame narrative, beginning with the suicide of the titular character and the discovery of her journals by her niece, Salma. As Salma delves into Sabriya’s life, she uncovers the pain and frustrated energy of her aunt—how passionately committed she was to the nationalist cause, but how she was unable to take an active part because of her sex. Sabriya’s life is undoubtedly tragic: her autonomy and hope for a loving partnership are brutally thwarted again and again by her cruel brother (representing the traditional values of a patriarchal society), and she is restrained by duty and gender roles. It’s a heartbreaking and beautifully layered story, written by one of Syria’s most celebrated novelists. My one complaint is that sometimes the dialogue dipped into dramatic soap opera land, but perhaps this is a translation issue. Either way: highly recommended. • . . Ulfat Idilbi was married at the age of seventeen before she could complete her education, but began writing in the 1940s. She is the author of two novels and four collections of short stories. Sabriya has been dramatized for Syrian television, and I super wish I could watch it. 🇸🇾 . . #readdiverse2018 + #badassbookbabes + #harpiesreadtheworld (A Book from a Country America is in Conflict With: Syria) • . . . . . . . #bibliophile #bookphoto #bookblogger #instablog #instablogger #bookstagramit #readersofinstagram #booksandbeans #coffeeandbooks #bookphoto #booksandcoffee #hyggelig #intersectionalfeminist #herstory #syria #nastywomen #revolutionarywomen #feministliterature #mentalhealthday #saturdaymorning #culturetripbooks #feministasfuck #intersectionalfeminism #islamicfeminism

Book #3 of 2018: Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie . . What a disappointment. . . TL;DR: Two Nigerian lovers leave their homeland and go to England and USA, return home to be reunited, sloppy story, confusing character development but smart, structured writing. . . Longer version: Ifemelu and Obinze, childhood sweethearts, are Nigerian citizens who travel to USA and England respectively, but return to their homeland (albeit under different circumstances) and are finally reunited. The book starts off with Ifemelu deciding to get her hair braided for her return home and has to travel a long way to get to a salon that'd do it (she lives in Princeton). The better part of the novel occurs at the hair salon, with flashbacks from Ifemelu's life interrupting the flow. I say interrupting because the time shifts were too abrupt and jarring. The only interesting parts of the novel were Adichie's observations on race and some of the blog posts that Ifemelu writes in the earlier part of the book absolutely hit the mark. "I came from a country where race was not an issue; I did not think of myself as black and I only became black when I came to America." I also liked Obinze but he wasn't given much importance. Adichie has a sardonic tone which I personally enjoyed a lot, and she writes good sentences but it didn't lift up the book for me. . . It wouldn't be fair to say that Americanah is just about race. It definitely poses questions for everyone to think and talk about, but the story itself creates too much noise around the important stuff. The characters, hair, the overtly teenage behaviour (seriously, older Ifemelu and Obinze seemed more like teens to me) and the unnecessary details about Ifemelu's relationships were too complicated. Also, Ifemelu was given a moral high ground for no reason (just because she's the protagonist does not mean she literally gets away with everything she does). . . Have you read Adichie? What did you think about this one? What do you like the most about her work? . . Also, first read along of the year with @fat_spectator_diaries. Thanks for doing this Barsha, I enjoyed our conversations, you added so much to my understanding ️

Heyyo guys! Happy #sherlocksaturday lol; nevermind I just made it up because I want to show @stellabookishart beautiful sherlock bookmark here Probably because I’ve finished reading Follow Me Back by @avgeiger and it’s so GOOD! I love the plot twist and I just can’t wait for the next book in the duology! Review can be found on my goodreads; as I haven’t had chance to take any other photo for a while (because the weather is annoying) I’ve submitted my assessments for Economics and Probability; I don’t care anymore for that. Time to study another stuff, yay!! And hope that Sunday would be good because I have to take my #irongold and not to mention some photos at the Park (also since my personal chef slash model slash photographer is with me). And he’s playing SQUASH in a while, wish him luck! Favorite Sherlock Holmes chara (from the TV series or the books or whichever you like)? I love Sherlock (cause of Benedict) but I feel more relatable to Mycroft somehow, probably because I’m an older sister

Coffee and a good book in the sun ️ • Making slow progress through Pachinko, as I have been busy with the start of my final semester of college. Happy Saturday, friends! I hope you all enjoy your weekend! I plan to get some cleaning done, catch up on sleep, and read as much as I can.. • Yesterday I stopped by my local library and picked up these 3 beauties. I went to the library all the time in middle school and early high school, but I honestly had fallen off the library train until recently. I’m really excited to start taking advantage of it again!. • Do you use your local library or are you someone who buys all of your books? Let me know!. • • #bookgeek   #bookish  #bibliophile  #booknerdigans   #seekthesimplicity  #booktogrophy  #becauseofreading  #bookstagramfeature  #igreads  #igbooks  #ilovebooks  #booklist  #bookcommunity  #readbooks  #booksarelife  #bookpassion  #simplepleasures  #ilovereading  #totalbooknerd  #epicreads  #culturetripbooks #bookstagram #locallibrary #borrowedbooks
