52/365 - The scaring monster. . My son, who is 7, has been having swimming lessons for the last 6 months or so. He’s been doing really well and at Christmas they moved him up a class. Great news. . Unfortunately it wasn’t great news to him, because it soon became a apparent he was terrified of the deep end of the pool. I endured two torturous swimming lessons with him crying hysterically (and loudly), and refusing point blank to get in the pool. The swimming teachers and I tried everything. I tried gentle, I tried understanding, I tried bribery, I tried reverse psychology and I tried losing my temper. All in front of the burning eyes of 25 or so other parents. Nothing worked and both weeks we returned home exhausted and sad. I want him to learn to swim well for obvious reasons, but also, if I’m honest I felt pretty pissed that I’d spent a lot of money on swimming lessons that was now being wasted. I didn’t know what to do. . As a last resort I decided to pay TWICE as much again, for a course of one on one lessons, at the same pool. I was aware I was risking losing all that money if he refused this time. . The lesson was this morning, and sure enough the moment I said it was time to get ready he started bawling. Nothing would calm him and I felt pretty sure it was doomed. . But then my partner stepped in, and took him to one side. I didn’t know what he was saying, but the crying stopped and we were out the door. . It was touch and go at the pool, but he did get in and within a few minutes was back to his happy self in the water. . In the car on the way home he said “I fought the scaring monster with my diamond sword! Just like Nick told me to.” . Very proud of both of them. . . Not my favourite illustration. I actually thought my sketch looked better than the finished thing. I used a sword fighting posing guide to get the pose and then I used Mowgli from the Jungle Book as my inspiration for my little boy. . . . . . . . #blendedfamily #stepfamily #illustration #freelanceillustrator #freelancelife #graphicdesigner #dailydoodle #freelancegraphicdesigner #365daysofdoodles #graphicdesign #illustrationoftheday #ipadproart #ipadpro #instaart #applepencil
