I haven't been very yogic lately. Yikes. I'm a yoga teacher, trying to start an online yoga business, and I said it... I haven't been yoga-ing. Not just, "Haven't rolled out my mat." More like talking shit and feeling like it, too. Negative self talk, worry, gossip, dwelling, impatience. Just listing it all makes me dizzy. So I turn back to this picture to remind myself- this yoga practice isn't just for a snazzy Insta photo. It's for life. Where can you apply yoga more fully to your life?

"in order to move forward and experience the growth we say we want to see, change has to not only step in and displace us but also, be accepted and dare i say appreciated (yikes!). last year is done and over with. and maybe shifting feels harder as we walk into this new year because 2017 left you bruised + defeated. or perhaps, you're still holding on to certain people, places, and things that hold you down versus lift you up. understandable. but remember, you are allowed to start over. . every single day is a new opportunity to learn from difficult (even painful) life lessons. if you haven't yet begun, start now. peel back the layers and address your truth head on so that you can grow + loosen your grip on the things that are holding you back. reclaim your power so that you can be in control of your life walk. as challenging as it is, let go of what was in a way that is healthy, and walk forward into your possibilities. give yourself permission to evolve. take shape. unravel. grow. . my mantra for the year is this: everything i wish to be is nestled within me. with self-trust, faith, and resilience my roots will run deep. i will grow. i will flourish. i will become." - @alex_elle #riskhappy

The world is full of shoulds. Some are healthy, others are not. Shoulds acts as rules for living. Most of our shoulds are based off beliefs and rules formed in our response to needs -- love, fitting in, achievements, etc. Other shoulds are adopted from family, friends, employers, pastors, mentors, etc. Some of the shoulds we tell ourselves have nothing to do with truth or reality. How much we believe in a should creates it's power. That power is what motivates us to act or paralyzes us. The unbending view of right and wrong is the reason we struggle with self-blame or guilt when we are forced to choose between the unbending rules and our genuine desire. • Healthy shoulds are FLEXIBLE and ALLOW for FAILURE. They allow exceptions where circumstances warrant. There is also a built-in awareness that a certain percentage of the time you will fail to live up to the ideal standard. • Healthy shoulds are OWNED. Owning means that you've critically examined this rule for living, and it still makes sense to you. As opposed to accepting a should without  determining how well they fit your own unique circumstances, personality, and needs. • Healthy shoulds are REALISTIC. It promotes behavior that leads to positive outcomes. It encourages you to do things that result in long term happiness for the people involved. You follow it because in YOUR EXPERIENCE the should guides you toward a way of living that feels good. • Healthy shoulds are life-ENHANCING. This means the shoulds you live by also take into account your basic needs as a human being. They give you the flexibility to pursue your emotional, intellectual, and recreational needs. Your shoulds for living do not diminish or narrow you. The next time you hear yourself say (or someone else tell you), "I should -------." Check it against the above criteria and follow through or let it go.
